John M. Shirley now brings 10 years of architectural experience into your projects. Graduating from the University of Utah with a Masters in Architecture where he focused on the fusion of history with technology in design. Design comes from study of the history of a site and the surrounding environment. John’s masters project took place in an existing gravel pit looking at the reclamation land to bring in a new use and experience to a scarred landscape. John has been able to bring these theories into the built world on a number of restorations and reclamation projects such as the Sundance Film Institute offices in Park City, Hughes residence, and the Henderson residence.

The site will always drive the design for John. Recently completed is a residence near Yosemite Park where he designed a sustainable home for a small family. The home burrows into the hillside against the strong south western sun of the summer, large overhangs shade the glass, insulated concrete walls protect from the elements while solar panels and collection of rainwater keep the home running and the garden growing. Not every project has an owner that drives towards sustainability but it is his belief that it will be designed to capture these qualities.

John has had experience working with a number of construction trades including rough carpentry which allow him to communicate well in the field. A strong belief in quality construction and the understanding of the construction process helps in creating a well detailed set of documentation. It is also understood that adjustments must be make in the field in order to meet construction restraints and a strong effort is always put forth to find solutions the meet the design standards in a timely manner.
