Life is more than breathing, eating, sleeping, working and recreation. Life is a living connection, a connection to time and place. In architecture, that connection transcends functional and pragmatic uses of space by fusing deep psychological relationships of people to environments. Appropriate architecture can enhance this relationship by turning information about specific sites, situations and cultures into metaphysical links. If successful, these links will bond a person to place.
In order for architecture to be responsive to specific site conditions and environmental factors, it should engage the site and yet be responsive to it. Part of this response requires an understanding of natural resources such as materials and energy. Using these resources in appropriate ways will create architecture that is desirable and sustainable. By mastering the basic principles of space, time and light, the architect can successfully use resources to connect the occupant to the physical on an emotional level.
Since joining JSA architects in 2000, Tyler Kirk has endeavored to create responsive architecture for living. He has worked with a broad range of clients including residential developers, commercial developers and individual home owners. While he has worked on exciting projects for those with deeper pockets, the real challenge has been creating attainable architecture for those with shallower ones. He has found success in designing small spaces that live large. He has worked on many high density projects where preservation of resources has been important. On these projects, he has strived to find an appropriate balance between natural and man made environments while preserving valuable community resources such as water, open space and energy.
Following this approach, Tyler has been recognized for his ability to shape each project into a success, and has helped to create thousands of livable connections. He is currently leading a local and international design team on projects in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Missouri.
